The Misteri of Campobasso: Living Sacred Images

The tradition and its place

For Corpus Christi, Campobasso carries the Misteri, structures designed to support tableaux of people who appear suspended around sacred scenes. Metal frames, costumes and careful movement transform engineering into a moving image. Children and adults participate in the public performance.

Reading the evidence

The surprise of apparently floating figures needs no supernatural explanation; studying how the machines are built adds to the wonder. Their continuity depends on local custodians, maintenance and rehearsals. They are a particular civic and Christian tradition, not a generic festival of “magic.”

Another angle

Notice how a metal framework changes the relationship between the person carried and the spectator below. The illusion is a feat of making, but a real body still needs support and coordination. The effect becomes more moving when the labour sustaining it is made visible.
