The tradition and its place

In Friuli, pignarûl are bonfires lit around Epiphany, often in a village gathering. People watch the flame and smoke while sharing food and conversation. In some local accounts the direction of the smoke is read as a sign for the coming year; the detail turns weather and landscape into a playful public language.

Reading the evidence

Variants differ across communities and a smoke omen is not a meteorological forecast. Lighting a large fire also requires the safety measures of the present. Preserving the names and each village’s version is more useful than assigning every bonfire a universal, supposedly prehistoric explanation.

Another angle

A column of smoke makes people look at the same sky and argue amiably about what it promises. This shared interpretation may matter more than whether an omen “comes true.” Record which village and which evening a telling comes from; neighbouring fires need not follow one script.
