The tradition and its place
In Brianza and nearby Lombard communities, the Giubiana is a figure represented by an effigy burned in a public winter gathering. Stories about the woman differ from town to town; some cast her as a witch or a threatening outsider. The burning closes a season in a visible, communal way.
Reading the evidence
The label “witch” can also invite questions about scapegoats and how fear is assigned to a female figure. Rather than claiming an unchanged ancestral rite, compare the actual local version, the date and the people who organise it today. That gives the ceremony a history as well as an atmosphere.
