The hardest part of a beautiful blank grimoire is often making the first mark. Here is permission to make it yours.

The tyranny of the perfect first page

A handmade book can be intimidating precisely because it is beautiful. The first page starts to feel too important to touch. The cure is simple: stop treating the book as a finished object. It was made to receive marks.

Begin with an index — or don't

Some people number pages and reserve space for an index. Others prefer a chronological record. Both work. A Book of Shadows is useful when its structure serves the person writing it, not when it imitates someone else's ideal grimoire.

What belongs inside

Ritual notes, symbols, dreams, recipes, seasonal observations, sketches, failed experiments, questions, quotations and personal correspondences can all belong. Distinguish historical information from modern interpretation when that matters.

Let it age

Cross things out. Add dates. Paste in a leaf or a photograph. Correct yourself. A book that shows its history is often more interesting than one kept pristine forever.
