Why candles work so well symbolically
A flame immediately changes the atmosphere of a room. It marks time, draws the eye and gives a ritual a visible beginning and end. Those qualities alone explain much of the candle's enduring place in spiritual and esoteric practice.
Choose one purpose
Instead of loading a candle with ten correspondences, choose one purpose: gratitude, focus, remembrance, a beginning or an ending. Write it down in one sentence.
Light, observe, close
Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, paper, pets and drafts. Light it, read the sentence and sit with it for a few minutes. Then extinguish the flame. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Colour correspondences
Modern magical traditions often assign meanings to candle colours. These systems vary. Use them as a creative language rather than immutable law; a plain candle can carry an intention perfectly well.
