A winter kitchen ritual built around ordinary biscuits, warm spices and symbols pressed into dough.

Edible symbols

Biscuits are a wonderfully uncomplicated way to bring symbolism into the kitchen. Stars, moons, suns, trees and simple geometric marks can be cut or stamped into dough without changing what the food fundamentally is.

Use a trusted recipe

Start with a biscuit recipe from a reliable culinary source and follow it normally, including allergen and food-safety considerations. If you add spices, keep to culinary quantities appropriate for the recipe.

A winter intention

Choose one shape or mark to repeat through the batch. A sun can represent the return of light; a tree can represent continuity; a star can simply be a star. Meaning does not need to be universal to be meaningful.

Offer, share, eat

If biscuits are placed on an altar, keep them protected from dust, smoke, wax, pets and non-food-safe objects if you intend to eat them later. Otherwise treat the altar portion as decorative and keep the food for eating separately.
