Two words often used interchangeably, one five-pointed figure, and a history far richer than horror-film shorthand.
The basic distinction
A pentagram is the five-pointed star drawn with intersecting lines. In common modern usage, a pentacle usually refers to a pentagram enclosed within a circle, although historical terminology is more complicated than that neat definition suggests.
Older than modern witchcraft
Five-pointed stars appear in different cultures and periods long before contemporary Pagan and witchcraft movements. Their meanings have varied enormously, which is why reducing the symbol to a single universal interpretation is misleading.
Modern esoteric meanings
In many modern Pagan and magical contexts the five points may be associated with earth, air, fire, water and spirit. The surrounding circle can be read as unity or containment. These are influential modern correspondences, not the only meanings the symbol has ever carried.
Why it appears in the workshop
As a carved or engraved form, the pentacle is visually balanced and immediately recognizable. I use it as part of a wider symbolic vocabulary, alongside runes, lunar imagery, Celtic-inspired knots and other motifs.
