What a ritual 'potion' can be

The word potion easily suggests fantasy bottles and mysterious ingredients. In a modern personal practice, it can simply mean a prepared liquid given a symbolic purpose. This version is intentionally mundane: water and salt, used externally and never presented as medicine.

Preparation

Place clean water in a small bowl and add a small pinch of ordinary salt. Stir slowly while naming the quality you want the threshold to represent: peace, welcome, privacy or protection.

Using it safely

Use only a tiny amount on a cloth to wipe a suitable, water-safe surface near the entrance. Do not use it on unfinished wood, delicate finishes, electrical surfaces or materials that may be damaged by water or salt. Do not drink it.

Meaning before ingredients

The interesting part of a ritual preparation is not collecting increasingly exotic substances. It is the deliberate act of giving an ordinary gesture a meaning. Simplicity also makes the practice easier to repeat and safer to live with.
